North American lion

The American Lion, as seen on JFC official page (now defunct).

The American Lion was a close relative of both the European cave lion and the modern lion of Asia and Africa. Unlike the modern lion, it may have lacked a distinct mane, and it was bigger than its modern counterpart. Alongside the Short-Faced Bear, it was one of the two mammals to have featured in JFC up to date.

In the episode Ice Age Monsters (aired Sep 23, 2008), the American Lion is confronted by the Short-Faced Bear over a dead bison. The two carnivores struggle with each other, until the bear gains the upper hand, throwing away the lion to its doom. This episode ends by the narrator telling how both the lion and the bear die out at the end of the Ice Age due to climate change and appearance of humans in North America.
